Grenada is a small Caribbean island better known for nutmeg than cocoa, but it holds a special place in the story of modern chocolate making. In 1999 the Grenada Chocolate Company began making chocolate on the island from its own organic cacao — "tree to bar" — at a time when nearly all chocolate was made thousands of miles from where the beans grew.
Grenadian cacao is mostly Trinitario and tends towards an earthy, fruity profile with a hint of the spice the island is famous for. It is also widely used by European makers, so look for Grenada in blends as well as in single-origin bars.
